Learning Ukrainian or Russian

Ukrainian is the official language. However, when in Kyiv the street language is Russian. Depending on where you are in the country is what will determine the language used. The east side of Ukraine is primarily Russian-speaking and the west side of Ukraine is primarily Ukrainian-speaking. Russian is easier to learn and more commonly used, I would recommend learning some basic Russian phrases to help you communicate while traveling here and with your children.

Your agency should be able to provide you with some great sources on obtaining language information tailored to adoption. We purchased some material she recommended from, Teresa Kelleher of Tender Loving Communications. We chose her material called, “Adopting from Russian” since we planned to learn Russian. Her website is: http://www.adoptingfromrussia.com/tlc_order_form.html. You can also email her at: Adopttlc@aol.com. Her address is: P.O. Box 90, Taylor, AZ 85939-0090.
Her language c.d. and little blue book were very helpful. The blue book was incredibly helpful while at the orphanage because we were able to communicate to our child, instantly in Russian.
