Packing for Adoption Travel

My husband and I managed one checked back for each of us. Do not use the very large luggage bags as they will not fit into the cars very well here. You should be able to get by with packing3 around 7 outfits (that includes at least 2 nicer outfits) you should have plenty of room in the medium size luggage bag. Of course, if you can fit more than 7, by all means do it.

With most all airline carriers, you will be allowed one free carry-on, plus either a computer bag, purse, briefcase, etc. I recommend putting at least one extra full change of clothes, deodorant, and toothbrush, and toothpaste in your carry-on just in case your luggage is lost. For your carry-on try using a book bag that goes onto your back. This bag can also be used when visiting the orphanage and bringing age appropriate activities, bottled water (for you), snacks (for you), camera as well as notepad each time you visit. You can also try and fit items into your computer bag. Just make sure your computer can be taken out of the bag when going through airport security.

Check with your agency but usually they will provide a packing list.

Clothing
You will walk A LOT! It is difficult to find a balance between comfortable walking shoes and fitting in with Ukrainian dress. They all seem to be dressed up with no place to go. The women wear dresses and high heels everywhere, while the men wear just about anything. Jeans are not commonly worn by men, but you see it occasionally. The tight ankle jeans as well as the loose fitting jeans are very common with the women and men. Rarely, you will see capris pants or Bermuda shorts.

If you are not concerned with “fitting in” with their dress than pack what you would be comfortable wearing for the season you will be traveling in. Keep in mind that they have harsh winters so if you will be there when it’s cold, pack so that you will have layers. Also, we were explained that their sidewalks are not shoveled very well and can become very icy. Personally, I would try and avoid high-heeled snow boots.

Women carry purses so feel free to bring one, just make sure it zips close. Men use wallets, but they put the wallet in their front pocket. This is smart anyway because pick-pocketing is common here. If at all possible, I would recommend purchasing a wallet (for both of you) that allows for your passport to be easily accessible. You will need your passport during all adoption-related activities.
*Note* I found a great wallet, made by Samsonite that includes a spot for your passport at Bed Bath & Beyond. It also has a thin strap so it can be used by itself as a “sling purse.” Yes, men here do carry male versions of a “sling purse” so it would be appropriate for a man to use this as well.
