This can be confusing and it was for us. Examples of the main types of electrical appliances you will need to bring with you are these: computer, camera, video camera, hair dryer, curling iron, electric razor and maybe a flat iron for your hair.
First of all, you MUST purchase a convertor for at least the outlet. Ukraine outlets are circular with 2 prongs spaced just about an inch from each other. I would recommend at least 2 of the outlet convertors. I found ours at Bed Bath & Beyond and they are made by Kensington. They are for European travel so they have most ALL of the European conversions. These outlet convertors DO NOT convert the voltage! This is important because if you try and use an electrical appliance that isn’t set up to be used at their electrical frequency, it will fry your appliance.
Ukraine’s electrical information: 220-240V, 50Hz
United State’s electrical information: 120V, 60Hz
You can check each of your appliances to see if they can be used with just an outlet convertor, meaning they do not need an electrical transformer or voltage convertor. If they can be used without a transformer or voltage convertor the appliance’s input will have to allow up to 240V of electricity at 50Hz. If your appliance is adaptable the voltage information should look similar to my computer’s information below. A computer is a great example of a multi voltage appliance that will have no problem being used without a transformer or convertor.
My computer: The information is located on the AC Adapter box (located on the computer’s electrical cord). On that box you should see something like, “AC Adapter” and then “Input.” In this area you should see something like, “Input: 100-240V 50-60Hz”
Most likely, your hair dryer and your electric razor will NOT be adaptable without a transformer or voltage convertor. We didn’t pack either of these items and asked our facilitator what to do about the hair dryer situation (she let me borrow one of hers) and we don’t use electric razors anyway. However, hair dyer companies have started to make “convertible” hair dryers. Meaning that you can select the voltage with a turn of a dial.
Here are some helpful websites that explain and give information in regards to electricity in Ukraine and other countries.
